Snowshoeing in the Dolomities
by Mario Dibona - Guide Alpine Cortina
S nowshoeing is the natural and logical progression from summer walking. This splendid and simple activity opens up an enchanting kingdom of snow-covered mountains, and these unforgettable itineraries take you right to the heart of nature’s best.
Snowshoeing needs no hard-learned technique or particular physical prerequisites, and this is perhaps the reason for its steadily increasing popularity. One thing is true though: walking with snowshoes can at first feel awkward and cumbersome, but one soon gets used to these wide and very special “foot extensions”. A word of warning: alpine experience is absolutely fundamental on some itineraries, as they cross varying types of snow and slopes.
Ice-skating
T he Olympic Ice Stadium was built to host the on-ice sports disciplines of 7th Winter Olympics in 1956, and it was "in the open air".
Nowadays, the Municipality have realized a cover for the stadium. Therefore weather conditions are no more a problem for the various events – sports, cultural, folklore – that take place here.
An artificially refrigerated ice-rink (30x60 m) is open both in winter and in summer. There are: a bar, ice-skating instructors, a solarium, and a playground for the children.
Once a week it is possible to skate late in the evening with the "Ice Disco Dance", a sort of on-ice disco where one can dance-skate while listening to the latest hits.
Skiing on powder snow - Off-piste
I n Cortina you will find the most spectacular panoramic views in the Alps and the most challenging slopes in the Dolomites but.... pay attention!Skiing off-piste is only for the most experienced skiers since it requires not only a fairly good knowledge of the technique, but also of the mountain and its safety regulations. Otherwise, an expert Mountain Guide is the best solution.
Ski-mountaineering
T here are several opportunities to enjoy skiing on powdery slopes.
Ski-mountaineering is the most exciting discipline for the most experienced skiers; the ascent being an excursion by ski equipped with “seal skins” and then the descent cruising down untouched slopes. Or you can use the lifts and then the “seal skins” to gain in elevation, this is certainly a less demanding excursion , though not so gratifying. If you do not have much time, you can use the lifts and ski down on the sides of the slope.
A further opportunity is Heliski: the most expensive and the least ecological. The ascent by helicopter to reach the highest peaks and the descent through steep gorges and over long powdery hills.
Let an expert guide you! The Cortina's Alpine Guides will escort you in total safety.
